Michael Wilson is gone. Shorter administration terminated him as of May 31. You read Mr. Wilson's story here. He did not want to leave. He loved his job. He was, at the age of 50, working on his doctorate so that he could better serve his students. He was a tenured faculty member who has served Shorter and her students for fourteen years.

Despite the careless journalism on the part of some of the media who claimed otherwise, Mr. Wilson did not resign. He returned his contract with the phrase regarding homosexuality struck out from the Personal Lifestyle Statement. One can do many things, but they cannot change what God creates them to be.

When, on May 3, 2012 he returned his contract to the Shorter Provost, he also sent a letter to Shorter President, Dr. Don Dowless.

On an interesting note: Shorter did bring an openly homosexual Christian as a speaker this last school year.

its going to get interesting to see how the "powers that be" will be able to defend this when they are taken to court for discrimination because of sexual orientation. they might say he didnt return a valid contract, but how can a contract be valid when it violates federal discrimination laws.

it think Mr Wilson did the best thing possible for himself in this situation. he set it up so that they either had to accept his contract as he returned it or fire him because he didnt agree with their discrimination of people because of their sexual orientation.

IMO Sorter will come out of the losing end of this if it is taken to court. While they may be a private institution they may not break federal law.

I don't think there are any federal laws banning discrimination based on sexual orientation. Some states have such laws, others do not.

In addition to the above, courts have largely upheld the "exception clause," which exempts religious organizations from provisions in the fourteenth amendment. This is why the equal opportunity employer statemente on most human resource pages at Christian colleges, universities, and other religious organizations noticeably omit "...on the basis of religion..."

Christianity is just as toxic as Islam. You moderates, however noble your cause, can't seem to make what Dowless and his handlers have done less toxic. Fundamentalist 1, religious moderates 0.

From a Baptist Today article appropriately titled "Brains in Chains": "Thus, one must affirm a belief that the Bible is "inerrant and infallible" -- the rootstock of Christian fundamentalism -- in order to be employed at Shorter. Professors who are supposed to help students develop critical thinking skills are not allowed to think for themselves, but required to adopt a very narrow view of scripture that allows precious little room for any interpretation beyond the pick-and-choose literalism common to fundamentalism.

Not surprisingly, at least 60 professors and other staff members have chosen to resign rather than surrender control of their conscience to the school's trustees, even though they may not have another job to go to."

Where do you religious moderates go from here?

I hate this.

I think we all know why it happened.

I detest hate like this, especially when it comes from religion.

Love one another - that was the message of Christ - all the other words written around that pale in comparison. That's been the message of every religious leader that ever was.

So don't invite me to your stupid, hateful churches. As long as religious institutions promote hate, and hurting people - I'll have no part of them.

You are so right! How can anyone who has hate in their hearts for an entire group of people call themselves a follower of Christ? It is disgusting that so many so called believers hate homosexuals simply because they are in fact homosexual. How great a day it will be when God Himself asks them why they focused so much attention on these very humans that HE created! This isn't between God and the homosexual and the church it is in fact between God and the person. We will all answer to God for OURSELVES, I will not answer for the church and I surely do not want the church to answer for me. I will take my chances and be kind to everyone, I think the odds are in my favor. And don't bother inviting me to these hypocritical churches either, I would rather be thought of as an Atheist, Agnostic or a Diest than a baptist at this point in history.

I bet there is an easy way to turn back the tide at Shorter. If everyone against the policy would donate to hire a private investigator and delve in Dowless' past, I bet we might learn some interesting things. From what I have seen, its usually the people with the most to hide that cast the focus of hate on others to deflect it from them selves. Wonder how many truck stop mens rooms, wide stanced airport bathrooms, adult video stores might possibly be lurking in his past? Be careful when you cast those stones, Dowless--your closet might be made of glass.

Typical liberal. Dig up dirt, insinuate lies. Typical Marxist ploy. "From what I have seen, its usually the people with the most to hide that cast the focus of hate on others to deflect it from them selves." I do not care what you see. I see you as a marxiest. I am tired about reading about Shorter. This argument has being going on about 2000 years....give it up, tired of reading the posts. Rather read more about Rome...you people get a room, or a web site. Leave the rest of us alone..............PM each other, leave us out of it.I had a choice in the late 60's of Shorter or Berry. The tales then were Gay. I chose Berry. You don't know crap and love the big O

Excellent comment! The only people who would be worried about the cover's being pulled away from their secret lives, are the ones who are held to the contradictory and faulty standards in the bible. I am with you. Any man who put's himself in the position to cast stones, should be exposed for the "man" he really is.

dwaina,

you assume those who don't agree with you are liberals? You don't want to read the posts about Shorter anymore? your tired of it and therefore want anyone who doesn't agree with you to stop posting? Wow I am going out on a limb here and assume that your a card carrying member of the GBC?!

June 11, 2012
ohmy, your type is so typically wrong. You are full of assumptions.......most wrong. I have not been in a Church since the tornado of 94, except for weddings and funerals. I did not know they carried cards. Is that another make believe? Just some words you use to try to tick someone off? WORDS mean something. But your words mean nothing.

Dear Dr. Dowless:

Shorter University hereby accepts your resignation from your position as president, effective immediately. Because you have not supported and acknowledged the institution's long legacy of academic excellence and Christian education, you do not have a valid contract. We wish you well in the future.

Sincerely,

Shorter's Supporters

I find this discourse very trying. As a child with a close family of grandparents, aunts and uncles, I was heavily exposed to Baptist, Methodist and Catholic services for many years. All my family visited and enjoyed the services of each other’s faiths on a regular basis. All I heard from all those different faiths was love and acceptance for all of God’s creatures. In my later years I find it very hard to understand the mindset of intolerance of those who have hijacked my hometown college. No, I did not attend Shorter. My scholarship was elsewhere. No, I will not disclose my choice of home church on this site for others to comment on. I will say that not one of my family members has ever said anything negative about my choice. They are happy that I believe.

I feel sorry for Mr. Wilson and all the other good people who have been harmed by these evil people. However, I get some solace in knowing that while Mr Wilson will have to find a job for the last part of his career (hopefully at a place where he is appreciated for who he is), Dowless will burn in Hell for eternity--certainly in appreciation for who he is.

jarnold has been called snarky by other people and he has lived up to this label by continually responding to every post about Shorter with his snarky, mean, arrogant responses. Is this the new face and mouthpiece of Shorter? What a pathetic example.

Shorter has been bitterly maligned by its critics, including vicious personal insults toward its leaders, compared to terrorist groups and slave holders, in an unceasing torrent of intolerance...every single article pertaining to Shorter, whether related to the documents in question or not, is met with scorn and ridicule...and somehow those with the audacity to scrutinize these comments are labeled as the "snarky" ones?

"Maligned" is not the proper word. The correct term is "exposed". Your wish to hide the bare, tiresome truth does not bind the rest of us.

Josh Arnold is an irrelevant staff person at Shorter (translation - not an academician). He probably gets more of the attention he craves by posting his snarky comments here than he does by doing his babysitting job on the Hill. He is such a fine example of the new "Christ Centered" approach that was lacking in the previous 140 years.

Cut jarnoldcr some slack. Treat him with respect. He posts in good faith, even if you disagree with him. Some of his comments may or may not be "snarky" but responding to snark with more snark just weakens your own credibility (and boosts his) in others', more neutral eyes.

ShorterProf, you called Josh Arnold "an irrelevant staff person" ... (translation - not an academician)." You characterized his job as "babysitting". You said his comments were "snarky". Reactions:

1. So what if he's not an academician. Staff are important, too, and their voice is important. You just make yourself look very small and snobbish with that remark.

2. "Babysitting"? Shorter is not a research university -- not now and not under the old regime -- it is a teaching institution. Student support is as important, if not important.

3. "Snarky"? Maybe, maybe not -- but yours were much worse.

I just heard Shirley Tilghman say support staff are critical to the success of a university, hers (Princeton University) included. In neutral outsiders' eyes, comments like yours just build the credibility of those you oppose. If you support movements like saveourshorter.com (I suspect you do), then you're not helping them.

jarnoldcr, you wrote: "an unceasing torrent of intolerance...every single article pertaining to Shorter, whether related to the documents in question or not, is met with scorn and ridicule."

That cuts 2 ways -- these and other sites have been full of equally vitriolic, intolerant and stupid comments from those who support Dr. Dowless and his changes. I'm not even talking about your word, "snark" -- I'm talking much worse.

You're being disingenuous here -- you know all this as well as I do.

Anonymous,

Thank you for your generous defense. Concerning your critique, I must give credit when due...supporters (myself included) have also fallen short of the kind of charity that should characterize a productive public discourse. I'll take your words as a helpful reproof and hope it seasons the conversations of all involved as well.

It's typical of Baptists to drool from the mouth when faced with the prospect of taking the money of non-baptists (75% of Shorter students) while foaming at the mouth when faced with interacting with the same "less desirables".

These Baptists have no problem using trickery and deceit to pretend as if they have accepted the resignation of this man, when obviously no resignation was offered.

Anyone with an open mind must now see that these old white men are no different than their paw-paws before them except now it's no longer acceptable to be openly racist, so they've moved on to bigotry against homosexuals, and GASP those who drink in public, i.e. Jesus.

These old white men are the epitome of all that is wrong with organized religion.

Thanks to all the local churches who have stood up against this hatred. In other words, none of them. The silent preachers and churches in this town should be ashamed.

Throw all of organized religion and "old white men" under the bus and call it tolerance. Next you'll be telling us that Billy Graham and the Salvation Army are a plague on modern society.

Michael is excellent at what he does. It's too bad that doesn't count for anything under this regime. I admire him for his honesty. There are many of us "liars" who have mortgages and need health insurance, so we are not willing to take the courageous stand that Michael took. We still loath the very ground that Dowless and Price walk on, and they know it. THEY are better liars and deceivers than those of us who signed their stupid statement. Do not subject your children to this toxic environment!

June 08, 2012
Shorter Prof,

If Shorter is full of liars and loathers who would gladly violate their conscience in exchange for thirty pieces of silver, perhaps folks would be better off sending their children elsewhere. I would like to think this isn't the case, and that the vast majority of those who have chosen to stay at Shorter are not among those you have described. I sincerely hope that those who feel they must sign the statement, despite their contrary beliefs, find comparable employment that better aligns with their heart and passions, for the mutual benefit of all involved.

Trelicious - Just wanted to inform you that months ago, Greg Tallant, formerly a minister at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Rome, preached a very moving sermon about what is happening at Shorter. In addition to this, St. Peter's opened it's doors early on to those faculty and staff who wanted a safe place to gather and talk about what they were experiencing at Shorter. Lastly, the Episcopal Bishop of the Atlanta diocese was kind enough to to travel to Rome to counsel those of us who are members of St. Peter's and who also work at Shorter. So, there is in fact one church in Rome who has stood up and spoken up.

I apologize. I remove one church, out of the 186,383 churches in this town, from those who tolerate bigotry.

jarnoldc, thank you for bringing up Billy Graham while ignoring the living white men who bully homosexuals in your own town. If they start hanging black people, hopefully you'll be so brave to bury your head and keep repeating "Billy Graham" until all the memories go away. Also, I've read your two posts carefully, and it seems to me that you are resigning. Thank you for your resignation.

There are several other churches who have been very supportive of the Shorter faculty in their membership who are being forced out due to their believes. Those churches may have taken a less abrasive approach because they don't want to make it uncomfortable if not impossible for those members who still are employed at Shorter to stay in their chosen church. To say that no church in Floyd County is opposing what is going on at Shorter is a misstatement.
