DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — DeKalb County's chief executive is clashing with county commissioners over a proposed soapbox derby track north of Lithonia.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the county has spent nearly $100,000 clearing land for the project even though commissioners haven't signed off on the project.

The commission has approved $585,000 to buy the land and $130,000 to design the track. But commissioners balked when CEO Burrell Ellis asked for approval to begin construction in January. The project's total price tag is expected to come to about $1 million.

The county's chief operating officer says the commission has voted four times this year to delay a construction contract but hasn't specifically voted the project down.

The contract is expected to come before the commission again Tuesday.
