GOP credibility a Senate 52 race issue

A campaign mailer from David Doss stating that his opponent Chuck Hufstetler voted as a Democrat is the latest bone of contention between two Republican candidates for the state Senate District 52 seat.

Hufstetler came out swinging at the Bartow County GOP debate last week, claiming the “attack ad” is an attempt to divert attention from the fact that Doss was a Democrat until he switched parties in 2005.

“I did vote in some Democratic primaries,” Hufstetler said. “But the truth is, when there is no Republican opposition, we try to put the weakest Democrat in office.”

Doss said he wants to talk about issues, but he’s fighting back against Hufstetler’s focus on party identification. He said many older Republicans — like former governor Sonny Perdue and Gov. Nathan Deal — started out as Democrats.

“Like Zell Miller said, ‘I didn’t leave the party. The party left me,’” Doss said. “I’ve always been a conservative.”

The third Republican in the race, Hayden Collins, rolled his eyes and removed his jacket. The moderator asked if he was getting warm, but Collins shook his head.

Click to see the My Voter Web page to check your voter registration status.

“No, I’m making sure I don’t get any mud on it,” he said, drawing a chuckle from the crowd.

Collins, a Tea Party member, said the Hufstetler-Doss battle is a surrogate for the ongoing war in the state Senate between Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and the group led by Senate President Pro Tempore Tommie Williams, R-Lyons, that stripped Cagle of most of his power in that chamber.

“There’s trench warfare going on in the Senate, but I’m not interested in it,” Collins said. “I’m interested in the 52nd.”

Doss, who has Cagle’s endorsement, said the Georgia Constitution calls for the lieutenant governor to preside over the Senate, and Williams’ committee usurped the authority from the voters who put Cagle in office.

“One only has to look at the last two years to see how dysfunctional the state Senate has become,” Doss said.

Hufstetler, who is endorsed by state Sen. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, said Cagle belongs to the executive branch of government, and the committee of Senate legislators are in the right.

“The Georgia Constitution says there needs to be a distinction between the executive, legislative and judicial branches,” Hufstetler said.

Collins said instead of choosing sides in an inter-party struggle, he’s set an example in his community through his military service and the foster home he ran with his wife.

“I think it’s a good idea to go down there without saying whose side I’m on,” Collins said. “Not laying it out will give me more negotiating power to benefit the district.”

Early voting already is under way for the July 31 primary that will decide which of the three men will take the seat. A runoff, if necessary, will be held Aug. 21. There is no Democratic candidate.

There were no personal attacks by me here. I presented facts and not opinions. My goal is to make sure that Doss record is presented to the voters. It is up to voters to decide which of the 3 candidates to support.

To the delight of some, I'll end my involvement on this thread. Goal completed

How very “mature” of you, Serpentoe. In case you missed my comment earlier today, I have added it to this post:

Serpentoe: It’s called “cronyism”, a noun meaning “favoritism shown to old friends without regard for their qualifications, aas in political appointments to office.” With Cagle, it is the old “you scratch my back and I will scratch your back” routine. The photo you use showing Doss with Herman is a few years old. Cain always wears a coat and tie in endorsement photos. Just curious, is a “message of support” the same as an endorsement? Cain has sent these “messages” to others around the state.

You are obviously the author of this website you keep promoting because it is an amazingtale. More specifically, its amazing b.s. Since Hufstetler doesn't have any ideas to run on, all you and him can do is attack. Listen to the people out there. They are sick of this type garbage politics. Doss continues to stay on message. All you and Chuck can do is lies, distort and sling mud. And all because Doss went down to the courthouse and exposed Chuck as being a phony Real Republican.

If you want answers to your charges, why not call Doss and ask him for yourself. I have never known the man to dodge a question. Come on, let's see you find the courage to come out from behind your lies ans slander and take on Doss yourself. He will eat your lunch.

#1) This is not Steven Turner.

#2) Your extremely arrogant and condescending.

#3) This muddled mudslinging has been typical of the Chuck Hufstetler campaign.

I'm not going to answer the questions listed on the David Doss Yellow Dog smear site. Please take the time to research those answers. They are listed in the very same papers in which initial questions were made.

I think my previous answers pointed to facts. It is certain that the entire community now understands the Local GOP Leadership, Tea Party Leadership, Chuck Hufstetler, Young GOP, is clearly trying to support a candidate in a GOP Primary. That is a slap in the face to not only David Doss, but to Hayden Collins. Hayden Collins was put in this race to hurt Doss in Bartow. Barry Loudermilk recruited him. People from Rome will be wasting a vote...

The Local GOP Core of Ten People has been trying to rig these elections for years. The idea is if they can control the Tea Party, The Evangelical, and the Dixiecrats, they can do things the way they want.

Why am I voting for David Doss, because he is open, transparent, successful, of good character, non-partisan, and eager to bring Rome's fair share of the pie back from Atlanta.

It sounds to me that the Hufstetler/Doss battle is more of the same typical politics. I am sick and tired of all the talk about who is the better conservative and how they are going to bring reform. Looks like both of these guys are puppets for bigger politicians. We need a real leader, not a follower. Hayden Collins has my vote.

Hayden Collins and David Doss were great in this debate.

If I were to only go by the Bartow debate I couldn't vote for Hufstetler, he spent more time talking about Doss than the issues and really didn't have a lot of good feedback to Doss' answers to his questions.

Hufstetler should have brushed aside the voting for democrats fact, he just dug himself into a whole by saying why he did it. There really is no reason to vote democrat in a primary when its certain a republican will win the area.

If Hufstetler pulls this off he needs a new campaign manager, and needs to actually prepare for these debates or get more comfortable in front of a crowd.

Hufstetler was great in this debate. He answered the false charges made about him, and stuck to facts, not personal attacks. Doss responded defensively by calling him a liar. Sounded like a kid in a school yard...but it was Doss' pants that were on fire.

Again...

Doss a Republican since 2005?? Why does he then still support liberal democrats, even stating this past month that he will be voting for democrats in this election! What's changed?

Furthermore, he is spewing the same rhetoric as the president - slamming Chuck Hufstetler for being an honest hard-working small business owner, who provides jobs in Floyd County...

<< My role in the project as developer, is to attract new businesses that will create new quality jobs. Jobs that are more than sub-minimum wage waitress positions serving oysters and fried fish.>>

A low-down liberal democrat ideology - and claims Chuck makes personal attacks!

Artsy:

I hope you stick to your guns. I think David Doss is committed to upholding the laws of the land. Getting business moving for our district. Getting tough on the craziness we have in the Senate. And making Georgia competitive with Alabama for big jobs outside of Atlanta.

Chuck Hufstetler is running on David Doss and a Roy Barnes friendship. Thats like throwing an egg at the Speaker of the US House for playing Golf with Obama. He does not even articulate Billions of dollars in the Bartow debate. He does not understand TADS. He does not understand working with city governments and transportation grants. He has not one clue as to how business run, but obviously TAKES CREDIT FOR EVERYTHING THE COUNTY COMMISSION VIEWED AS A SUCCESS. What an insult to guys like Jeff Brown. Guys that had Al Leonard as controller to help and put the County in good standing. Removing the $1 Million Bonus the County was paying FMC was the previous commission that added money to the General Fund. There is $7 million right there.

How about the cost of the Jail being lowered due to the expansion and adding surrounding county inmates with offset costs???? CHUCK did that too correct?????

Chuck needs to start sharing solutions fast instead of the "Anything but David Doss" Rhetoric..... That PIG WON'T FLY!

Cagle has a deal with Doss. I'll endorse you if you vote to restore my power in the Senate. I'll give it to Doss on this issue. He admitted that he will be giving Cagle a yes vote in exchange for the endorsement.

Cain's support not was not an endorsement. The grapevine going around is that consideration was given for some campaign debt relief to Herman Cain's failed Presidential run.

There is also rumor of another message of support coming from another high profile person.

Any logical person knows that Herman Cain would not have supported Doss if he had read DemocratDavidDoss.com. I could sit across from Cain and said, "You're the greatest; 999 is the answer; You got the shaft just like the local party is trying to do to me; We are a lot alike; Rome and Floyd County love you and me; We are the future; We are conservatives."

Liberal or Democrat in this part of the country there are some that are purely democrat by tradition, though the big republican shift the past decade brought some guys over.

Right now republicans are winning elections not because who we put into governors races but because democrats became more liberal in the south. I don't think the democrat thing is an issue for Doss.

He was pretty conservative in his democrat days and the decision for this senate seat will not be nearly as worrisome as the governors primary vote a couple of years ago. We got some good guys up there but I haven't been too happy with some of Hufstetler's work on the commission.

Leaning towards Hayden Collins personally he seems to be a genuine small government guy hope he's a tea party guy but I'm hoping he sticks to the national tea party ideals and not the Rome tea party ideals.

You people kill me. Hufstetler names himself the "Real Republican", and a "Life Long Republican" and before his voting record was exposed, acct101 and others used that as the reason to vote for him.

Then his voting record is exposed and you say he's a good Republican for voting for weak Democrats. So instead of voting for the best candidate, he puts Party ahead of the Public. That's a admirable quality. How is Doos exposing Chuck's voting record a personal attack? It's a fact. It's a public document. Spin it anyway you like, but it's not a personal attack.

Just look at the Cartersville debate from Chuck's opening introduction and you will see a personal attack. And the garbage Chuck puts out on the web is just like the TAD issue. It's full of lies, and cut and paste clippings. I read the ajc article about the Reynolds Plantation meeting. It says Doss was given a $250 gift, but immediately returned it. Chuck's lies forgot to include that in their version.

I can remember some things that Chuck did while on the county commission that were flat out illegal and unethical. I guess if that comes out, amazingtale, acct101,jawgadude and others will make excuses for that to. If this garbage about Doss was true, why would Cagle, Cain, and so many local officials be in his corner? I gues they are all corrupt too. No, you fools are just naive.

Doss claims to have voted straight Republican - I don't want a "follower" who votes the way his party tells him to. I want someone who can think and act for himself and his own conscience, one who will cross party lines if it's for the good of the people. I also am a staunch Republican but I have also voted Democratic in the past if I felt it was for the general good. That's what's wrong with our current 'do nothing congress' - they follow the party ticket unmovingly, blindly forgetting their obligation to represent their constituents.

serpenttoe appears to be the naive one here. One who falls into the category of being a diehard Democrate who will support a straight ticket even if the Dems wanted to do away with Mom's apple pie and baseball.

Limited Government, you quoted him correctly. Are you saying that democrats don’t ask for a republican ballot in primaries when their man/woman doesn’t have opposition and do the same? If Doss does win the primary, it will be because of the cross-over votes of democrats who know one when they see (hear) one. I am politically active, well aware of the current issues and both of their prior political histories.

@amazingtale, I hope (Steven) will just keep talking. That ridiculous attack radio ad is the best thing to happen to DD's opponents. Does he think if he keeps repeating the same misinformation over and again, it will make it true? It's everyone's own business who they will vote for, but personally attacking Hufstetler, who has always put the interests of the taxpayers first, is going to backfire. Bottom line is we pay taxes and want representation from our District. One man has a proven record in the County Commission, (Hufstetler) and the other one (DD) has problems on record at both the commission and the GDOT. I just can't understand why someone would support a candidate (Doss) with such a controversial record that has stench all over it.

David Doss's response to ill-informed and misguided allegations disputing his private business practices and his personal investment into the 52nd district's economy:

David Doss For State Senate

P.O. Box 431

Rome, Georgia 30162

For Immediate Release

July 16, 2012

The only thing Real about Chuck Hufstetler is his inability to tell the truth. Instead of talking about the issues and offering his solution for the problems facing our state, Chuck continues his smear campaign based on distortions of the truth and outright lies. At the July 12th debate in Bartow County, Chuck told one lie after another and never once offered a constructive idea for the citizens of the 52nd District.

For a man who claims to be a financial expert, Chuck apparently does not possess even the most basic understanding of a Tax Allocation District(TAD). My company, Samson Developers, was selected by the City of Rome through a public competition, to be the developer of record for 4.4 acres of city owned property on West Third Street in downtown Rome. The document that Chuck linked in his press release was Samson Developers submittal to the City of Rome for the competition. It is not an application for a TAD loan.

The TAD loan referenced in the proposal is for the hotel owner/operator. Duke Hospitality, LLC is the owner/operator of the hotel not Samson Developers or David Doss. My role in the project as developer, is to attract new businesses that will create new quality jobs. Jobs that are more than sub-minimum wage waitress positions serving oysters and fried fish. The Tax Allocation District was created by the City of Rome prior to my involvement and the tax incentives are available to anyone who locates a new business to the district. There are no tax breaks or tax incentives available to non-owners like Samson Developers or David Doss.

This is yet another example of how Chuck Hufstetler views this election. He believes personal attacks, lies and distortions will fool the voters of the 52nd District. Just like Chuck wants you to believe Real Republicans

vote Democratic. You just can't depend on Chuck Hufstetler to tell the truth.

LimitGovernment, I don't know where you get your information, but Chuck never voted in a Democrat Presidential Preference Primary, only Democrat local primaries when there was nothing going on the Republican side.

The ads Doss is running and sending out trying to insinuate that Chuck voted for Obama are just plain lies and wrong unless Obama was trying to be on the Floyd County Commission.

What Doss is trying to do is deflect from the fact that as late as 2010 he was giving $1,000 to liberals like Roy Barnes. I have to ask, how many of you have $1,000 to blow by giving it to someone you actually hope loses the election? I don't. And as someone who claims to be staunchly pro-life, how can Doss justify giving $1,000 to someone who is pro-choice?

Doss admitted on the Tea Party Talk show that he was going to vote Democrat again this year, for Floyd County Sheriff, so I suspect he votes for Democrats often when it cannot be proven.

After watching the actual debate online, I noticed that Collins is able to take his jacket off and stay out of it, because he basically fails to take a stand on just about anything. He seems like a nice enough fellow, but what is he even talking about a lot of the time? I just checked out the link below for democratdaviddoss.com and could not believe all the things I had forgotten about his constant turmoil and penchant for causing the wrong kind of trouble for unethical reasons. I knew that I wouldn't vote for him, but good grief. I don't really care about all of the personal attacks and don't pay attention to them. What I do care about are the facts, and I don't pay so much attention to what they say, as look at their past records. Doss has a record that says the opposite of what comes out of his mouth, and yet calls Hufstetler a liar in the debate. I don't blame Hufstetler for defending himself after the mailers, attack radio ad (which doesn't help Doss btw), and negative website appeared. In fact, I'm gonna go ahead and vote early for Hufstetler. As for Herman Cain, as others have stated, he doesn't even live in the District, and neither do the majority of Doss contributors, and although I have liked Herman Cain on the radio, he was obviously misled so the support from him just doesn't mean anything. In a nutshell, there is just too much political stink attached to Doss.

The fact is, Chuck believes in the rule of man, not the rule of law. Chuck put 40 million in the bank, as well as the SPLOST taxes that we have had in Place. Chucks even had the Audacity to put big government on the local level. People are hauling the trash out of town because its too expensive to do business now. Redmond Hospital paid 16 Million off its bottom line in indigent care and property taxes, yet Chuck continues to wage a war against HCA and local private jobs. Chuck almost cost us the Rome Braves by demanding the taxpayers not guarantee 300 tickets per game as they were asking for. 300???? They have averaged over 2500 since they started leasing the stadium. CHUCK proves he isn't a very good businessman.
