Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters ordered the county public works department to erect a guardrail on Penn Bridge Road.

More than four vehicles have crashed into the Chattooga River this year along the same section of roadway.

Winters’ order came after two people narrowly escaped injury last week when the vehicle in which they were riding slipped off the road and into the river. The car ended up completely submerged but the occupants swam to safety.

All the wrecks occurred on the south side of the large bridge on Penn Bridge Road.
