Wrestling card at Memorial Gym Saturday

Wrestling returns to Rome next Saturday night, with a top-bracket program on the agenda, and sponsored by the Rome Kiwanis Club. The card will start at 9 p.m.

Three matches are tabbed for the evening, including the main event, Australian tag team match, plus two preliminary all-star bouts.

In the main go, Freddie Blassie and the Russian Crusher will match holds against a team of Indians – Chief Crazy Horse and Chief Little Eagle. The main bout is scheduled for a best-of-three falls, one-hour time limit. Don McIntire, promoter of the matches, said the Indians will be going all out against Blassie and the Crusher in that they are “beginning a run” for the world championship. This will be the first time Crazy Horse and Little Eagle have appeared together and they are expected to form a real rugged twosome for their touted opponents.

Better ‘stop, look, listen’ – police watching

“Stop, look and listen” are signs usually used for safety purposes, but Rome Police Chief Ted Peacock had another reason to bring up the subject today.

He reports that the city has been missing a large number of street markers from various intersections of Rome. In one instance, he said, a new sign was stolen even before the cement base had dried. These signs cost the taxpayers large sums of money each year, the chief warned, and they are not put up for the purpose of decorating the walls of a child’s bedroom or garage.

He further warned that anyone caught with the signs in his possession will be prosecuted.

Well, that does make a difference

BALTIMORE, Md. (AP) – A neighborhood news tipster phoned the editor of a suburban weekly Monday to tell him about an occupied truck rolling downhill and smashing into a home.

“Not interested,” said the editor Richard Byrd. “This kind of thing happens in the newspaper business all the time.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re taking it so calmly,” the tipster said. “It was your house.”
