I ALMOST fell out of my “swang” the other day. Why? Somebody with Floyd County took it on themselves to use their heads for something besides a hat rack! Headlines in the Rome News Tribune: “Inmates to Repair Roof of County Jail.” The jail administration made this announcement — now maybe we are on the right track. Saving some $705,000.00 on one simple project. If it holds it’s great! The citizens of Floyd County’s hats are off to you and who ever helped you. Would you now get on the project of fixing the cell locks and electrical wiring to the towers? My suggestion is to start with the inmates. Not all inmates are in jail for petty crimes...you never know!!

Also at this time I might thank the Rome/Floyd Recreation Authority for finding the light switches to the tennis courts to cut the lights off when tennis is not being played. Also the decision to cut grass in certain areas higher to conserve labor and to keep maintenance cost down on their equipment is a good idea. The other thing coming from the Recreation Authority is that any other projects will be completed depending on where the money is coming from now and in the future. Sounds like a good idea and maybe should have been done a long time ago. Maybe those who use the recreation facilities should advise the authority about cost cutting ideas.

There was a word in the editorial page the other day that I had not heard in a long time: frugality. I would say that a lot of “old timers” know what it means but maybe some of the younger people do not. It does not mean bond, bond, grant, grant, just kick the can down the road to our children and grandchildren.

Did I ask you to register to vote? By all means on Election Day go VOTE!!!

EDITOR’S NOTE: Billy Campbell died June 29. His son found this letter by his father’s easy chair and brought it to the newspaper. As always, Mr. Campbell concludes his letter with an admonition to vote in the July 31 primary.
