VARNELL — Voters on Tuesday approved the retail sale of malt beverages and wine on Sundays.

The final vote was 132 (54.32 percent) in favor and 111 (45.68 percent) against.

“The City Council put this on the ballot because many people asked them for it, and we wanted to let the voters decide,” Varnell Mayor Dan Peeples said. “The City Council didn’t determine this. We let the voters decide.”

The Whitfield County city currently permits the retail sale of malt beverages and wine Monday to Saturday, and it permits the sale of malt beverages, wine and distilled spirits by the drink in restaurants seven days a week.
