AS WE FOLLOW your election campaign coverage this year, we are reminded that Congress will return to Capitol Hill after Election Day to focus on controlling costs for programs, such as Medicare. I believe legislators must support cost-effective home health care, which can control Medicare costs by reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and helping older Georgians to live more independently at home.

Georgia already has close to 1.3 million Medicare recipients and our 65-and-over population will increase 143 percent between 2000 and 2030. Yet Congress could impose additional Medicare reimbursement cuts on home health services, limiting access to care and the opportunity for greater efficiency. The home health community believes it can also help address the nation’s fiscal challenges by proposing legislation to strengthen Medicare’s integrity and reduce costly fraud and abuse.

As a home health professional, I want to thank Rep. Phil Gingrey for his past support of home health. I hope he will continue to support reimbursements for Medicare home health services, and will vote to strengthen Medicare integrity.

The writer is correct that care in the home is safer than the hospital where infections are frequent and the surroundings unfamiliar. It is less costly and is the care most people prefer.

Expansion of home health is part of the ACA as is development of user-friendly communication technology for monitoring patients' vitals remotely. That eliminates stressful transfer to medical facilities and unnecessary costs.

In his ideologically driven, "protect the profit-generating status guo," Rep Gingrey, a millionaire several times over, pledges to repeal "obamacare". That will hurt Georgia families and drag down our economy. All portions of the ACA are dependent on others for improved quality and reduced costs.

Gingrey represents the profit-driven medical industry milking the government. I wouldn't believe anything he says.
