The number of jobs in Rome has improved compared to last year but is still well below peak employment in 2005.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics in Washington issued a report this week indicating that metropolitan Rome had some 37,700 jobs in June — that’s down from 38,600 in June 2011 but up from the rock bottom of 36,800 in August 2011.

The 10-year report shows that employment in Rome and Floyd County peaked at 43,500 in May and September of 2005.

The same report shows that Rome was tied with Greenville, S.C., at 333 among the nation’s 372 metropolitan statistical areas in June when unemployment was reported at 10.6 percent.

The report indicated the nation’s lowest unemployment rate was in Bismarck, N.D., at 2.8 percent, and the highest rate was in El Centro, Calif., at 28.2 percent.
