ATHENS — Georgia cornerback Branden Smith won't be suspended after his March arrest on a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession.

Coach Mark Richt said after practice Saturday that Smith won't have to sit out the Bulldogs' season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 1, or any other game. Richt says the coaching staff looked into the facts and have "got peace that we're doing the right thing" by letting Smith play.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/T8Otdt ) Smith says he passed two drug tests following his arrest and completed a pre-trial diversion program. The senior says he was "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Georgia safety Bacarri Rambo and inside linebacker Alec Ogletree also face possible suspensions for unrelated issues. Their status was unknown Saturday.
