IN 1976 MY FAMILY moved to Cave Spring from Augusta so we could be with our son who was a student at GSD. We both were promised a job at GSD if we would move to Cave Spring. This did not happen. In about a year and half we found good jobs with a lot of hard work with 80 to 90 hours a week and this paid off. We never went down town at any time, except to go to church, because we both worked out of town.

One afternoon while working in the yard, a truck tried to come across my new yard; I told the driver not to be driving in my yard. He said, “You are an outsider and I go where I want to!” I said, “Not tonight.” I called police, but police never came.

Several years later, in the 1990s, two people, who were sent by the mayor, came to our house and asked me if I would run a recall. I said that I would let them know later. They said that they would do all the work if I would just be in charge. For the next two days, after talking with a city leader, I said yes. Things went well for the next two months. After a court hearing, the judge said we could move forward. This picked up for a few days and then I was left on my own. After a long and hard weekend, I decided to resign that Tuesday night, which was the council meeting. I sat on front row and heard one of the councilmen tell another that I was not smart enough to put them out of office!

After that remark, I decided to keep going; then the telephone calls started coming. “We will burn your house down. We will see you in hell!” They called the IRS because we had a new house and new car. Even after that we still won.

After that I was asked to run for Mayor and I said, “Yes.”

After working 12 hours or more each day, I would then go out to talk with citizens of Cave Spring. That is when I begin to learn more about Peyton Place No. 2. The majority of citizens are related in some way, who was sleeping with who, who was stealing from the city and who was clocked in but not on the job. If you would like to know who runs the town, just look for the trashy yards.
