The race for Floyd County Sheriff pits an incumbent sheriff against a veteran law enforcement officer.

Sheriff Tim Burkhalter, who is running as a Democrat, is seeking his third term in office. He was elected in 2004 after defeating a sitting sheriff, Tommy Rickman.

In answering a Q&A, Burkhalter said he is still excited about being sheriff. “I have a proven record that I stand on, and every single thing I have promised our community that we would accomplish we have,” Burkhalter said.

Republican Cary Cooper is a veteran Floyd County police officer who retired in March of this year.

He said he doesn’t have a personal beef with Burkhalter but thinks it’s time for a change.

“Our priorities need to be straightened out,” he said.

Early voting is already under way. The general election is Nov. 6.
