GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A northeast Georgia sheriff has installed a permanent box designed for residents to dispose of unused or expired prescription medicine.

Hall County Sheriff Steve Cronic said the box is needed due to increases in the abuse of prescription medications.

The Times of Gainesville reports that authorities hope the boxes will reduce the exposure of prescription drugs for potential misuse.

Gainesville police have set up a similar box in the city.
