Child killed, others wounded in East Alabama police shootout

HEFLIN, Ala. (AP) — A child was reported killed as gunfire erupted in eastern Alabama between police and a suspect armed with an assault rifle.

Oxford police Lt. L.G. Owens told The Anniston Star that authorities chased the suspect after a shooting in Cleburne County on Saturday. The chase ended at a busy interchange near Interstate 20.

Oxford police Chief Bill Partridge told the newspaper that officers got into a firefight with the suspect, who was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. One Heflin police officer was injured.

Police told WBMA-TV that a child was killed and that SWAT team members shot and killed the suspect in nearby Coldwater.

A prosecutor for Calhoun and Cleburne counties, Lynn Hammond, said police agencies were investigating a "horrific crime" involving a homicide.
