A pilot failed to engage his landing gear and landed his Mooney 201 aircraft on its belly at Richard B. Russell Regional airport today.

According to Mike Matthews, airport manager, the pilot of the plane was not from here and no one knows why he was landing here.

When Matthews asked the pilot what happened, the pilot said he simply didn't put his landing gear down.

The plane is a Mooney 201 and did not take much damage. The pilot was unhurt.

That plane does not have a hanger here and was not a local pilot.

The FAA and NTSB have been notified.
