Ringing in the New Year is always time for fun, family, friends and a traditional feast, but some people may find themselves alone and depressed for the holiday.

But the hungry, homeless and heartbroken are invited to feast at Greater Christ Temple Rapture Preparation Holiness Cathedral, said Bishop Nealon Guthrie.

What has become an annual tradition, Guthrie and the church, located at 1321 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., are hosting the celebration at 11 a.m. on Jan. 1. 

The theme of this year’s feast, Guthrie said, is “Moving Forward,” and he said he expects the celebration will attract some 300 people or more people.

The free meal will provide a dinner of turkey, ham, black-eyed peas and collard greens, and traditionally, the first 50 people age 60 or older will receive a coin as a symbol of good luck and prosperity in the New Year.

Guthrie extends welcoming, loving arms to those who are depressed and hopeless. There will be music and out-of-town guests coming to celebrate. Anyone who wants to cook something at home can bring a hot dish or dessert as well.

He’s also looking for clothing donations, hoping to give away warm clothes to those who are in need. Likewise, Guthrie asks local businesses to donate food for the feast, so no bellies will be hungry on New Year’s Day. Past donors include Kroger, Panera Bread Co., Huddle House, Ryan’s, Great Harvest Bread Co. and Landmark restaurant.
