Rome police arrested two men on drug charges after following up on a tip that the men might have been involved with a recent robbery near Dunkin Donuts on Shorter Avenue, reports stated.

According to Rome police reports:

Daniel Pankaj Carpenter, 23, of 707 Lee Ave., and Grayson Lee Jones, 22, of 710 Cedar Ave., were jailed on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana. Carpenter was also charged with a felony charge of possession of a Schedule IV drug, after a search of the house turned up the drugs Monday evening.

Police arrived at the Lee Avenue residence after a phoned-in tip claimed one of the men at the residence at the time was involved in a robbery of a woman near the recently opened Dunkin Donuts on Shorter Avenue on Dec. 28.

None of the men claimed any involvement with the robbery, but a police officer suspected something was up at the residence after the door was slammed in his face, and he claimed to have noticed a “strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from the residence.”

Police questioned Carpenter, Jones and two other men who were not arrested about the marijuana smoke. The four confessed to smoking a joint, and upon being patted down Jones was reported to have dropped a bag on the floor.

After taking Jones into custody, police brought in a K-9 unit to search the house and found an additional bag of marijuana and a quantity of suspected Xanax and digital scales.

Both Jones and Carpenter were taken to the Floyd County Jail without further incident. Carpenter remained in jail on the charges along with a verbal warrant for a probation violation charge. Jones was later released on a cash bond on the misdemeanor charge.
