Dozens of paddlers from across the state are expected to convene Jan. 12 at Dixon Landing on the Etowah River for Rome’s annual Polar Bear Paddle.

The six-mile paddle from Dixon Landing at Grizzard Park to Heritage Park in downtown Rome

provides a view of Rome from the river, including encounters with Native American fish weirs and other historic sites.

Complimentary canoes and kayaks are available while they last. Pre-registration is required.

Participants can register online at www.coosa.org or by calling CRBI recreational outreach volunteer Alan Crawford at 706-237-0917 or CRBI at 706-232-2724. There is no cost to participate in the paddle.

The event is sponsored by Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful, the Rome-Floyd County ECO River Education Center and the Coosa River Basin Initiative. Complimentary hot chocolate and donuts will be available as well as shuttle services and river maps for paddlers. Paddlers are expected to launch from Dixon Landing at 10 a.m; the six-mile journey takes 2-4 hours.

“This event is designed to promote recreational use of Rome’s rivers and the Etowah River Water Trail,” said CRBI Executive Director & Riverkeeper Joe Cook. “We’ve got a great recreational resource in the heart of the city, and more and more people are discovering its charms.”

Last fall, CRBI launched its Etowah River Water Trail website at www.etowahwatertrail.org The website is a comprehensive guide to the Etowah River with printable maps and guides for all 162 miles of the river as well as an interactive map in which website visitors can tour the river from their desktop.
