Tybee Island city council members on Thursday instructed Police Chief Bob Bryson to do his best to remove the coyotes. To help in that effort, they approved the purchase of a $1,000 tranquilizer gun and a trap.
There have been varying reports about the danger the coyotes pose, The Savannah Morning News reported (http://bit.ly/XhPEGt ).
Some residents have said the coyotes run away when spotted, and others reported threatening behavior, the police chief said.
Tybee Island Councilman Bill Garbett said that he knew of one resident whose dog was attacked. He said the coyotes are not afraid of people.
"It's got the potential to become a major problem," Garbett said.
The coyotes have become a nuisance, Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman said.
"Get rid of them," Buelterman said. "If people get mad, so be it."
