Two correctional officers were assaulted by inmates at Hays State Prison early Sunday morning, Jan. 27, but were already back at work Sunday afternoon, state officials said.

Georgia Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gwendolyn Hogan said in an email Sunday afternoon that two officers were assaulted at the close security facility in Trion.

While their exact injuries were not given, Hogan said both officers received minor injuries and were treated at a local area hospital.

They were then released and returned home earlier Sunday and were back at work. The incident is under investigation.

This comes on the heels of the death of three inmates at the Chattooga County facility during the last month and a half.

Damien McClain was killed in a fight in a prison cell on Dec. 26, and Derrick Stubbs was found dead while in protective custody on Dec. 22.

Nathaniel Reynolds, 30, died at an area hospital on Jan. 18 following an altercation with fellow inmates.

Ricardo Beltran-Gonzales, 36, and Leonardo Ramos Rodrigues, 39, were charged in connection with Reynolds’ death last week.

Cremy, not sure if you're an officer there or not, but don't waste your time being angry about the situation, expecting it to change, or expecting to convince the public to a point where they demand action. After many, many years in a public safety family I've learned that you guys have to look out for each other. Your management and the public will shank you quicker than the inmates.

Politicians only care about law enforcement when they're giving lip service. This usually occurs once a year in front of a large crowd and then it's over until next year.

The public only focuses on law enforcement when the officers have done something wrong or are accused of wrongdoing.

Your management only cares about preventing waves in the ocean, maintaining their jobs and increasing their power.

Quit complaining, quit hoping for change, quit assuming that anyone cares. You MUST take care of yourself.

I left right before this started happening... I was one of the lucky ones that had options outside of those walls. But it still pains me to see my fellow officers- people whom I love dearly- continually lied to and left to fend for themselves, only to be hung out to dry when it all sticks to the fan.

It is NO secret; the GDC, the prison, and the powers-that-be there have one intention when things like this happen- They aim to separate themselves, the prison, and the State as far from the incident- and the officers involved- as quickly and as far as they possibly can. They try to find an inmate or officer to blame, and crucify those people, while trying to separate their interests from the blame, whether it is truthful or not (Don't believe me? For those of you who were there- think back to D-Building, when the officer got his jaw broken, and the cadet suffered bruised and broken ribs... who got blamed??? The inmates? Hell no- CERT... then, GDC wouldn't even have their backs in court, although they had sufficient reason to use deadly force on the inmates that were rioting...

Did they lock the compound down for a while? Hell no- they APOLOGIZED, and gave them cookies and gatorade, even though the officer that was attacked was following GDC. rules.

Now, think back to the officer stabbing in February of last year... officer was stabbed 28 times... did the dorm or compound get locked down, to punish them for attacking an officer? Hell No... they blamed it on the officer, for not being able to control the inmates while he was opening the gate to let them go to chow... Even AFTER they had been told that the inmate that did it was going to stab THAT OFFICER! They still put him working the building that the inmate was at..(Those who know me KNOW what I am saying about them knowing in advance, don't you?)).........

Facts are facts.... we were just bellboys at the HAYS HILTON HOTEL...

So your answer to the situation at Hays State Prison is to keep your mouth shut and sweep it under the rug? Are you crazy? Now is the time for the officers to scream as loud as they can. Now is the time for the public in Chattooga and surrounding counties to let the Dept. of Corrections know that they have had enough. The public should be very afraid!!

The environment at Hays is extremely dangerous and with the attitude of the commissioner, the warden and the deputy warden, nothing will change if the people of this area don't stand up and demand changes.

The DOC commissioner has allowed the conditions at Hays to deteriorate by allowing an incompetent warden and deputy warden to run the place in the ground and chase all the experienced personnel away. With the officers that have left and the officers that are currently on FMLA and trying to leave, they have a staff shortage of at least 100 positions. Doors that won't lock and haven't locked for years; Officers working 12 to 18 hours a day, plus overtime. Does that sound like Hays is a safe place for officers or the public? NO

How dare you, Trelicious, tell someone to quit complaining or hoping for change! HOPE is all the officers at Hays State Prison have at this point.

Shame on you!!!!

The interesting thing here is, the inmates have been on lock-down since the last murder at Hays... the officers got stabbed by the inmates while trying to perform a count of the inmates in the dorm. Since the cell doors' locks haven't worked for a few years (a problem that the officers have complained about for a couple of years, to no avail), the inmates were up and out of their cells, and NOT locked down, as they were supposed to be, making this a turket shoot.

The officers had been told by the Deputy Warden to watch out for the inmates staying out of their cells, and to be careful at the start of their shift-- common sense tells u that the powers-that-be knew this was about to happen, but yet, they had no real plan in place to curtail it.

The officers went in with a pepperball gun and tried to persuade the inmates to go in their cells, and all the inmates jumped the officers, stabbing two, and beating a few others with broom sticks and other weapons.... but we all know that the Official GDC statement will read the same as usual, so let me go ahead and make their statement for them: "two officers received non-life-threatening injuries while performing their duties at Hays State Prison. The situation is under control, and nobody is in any immediate danger at this time. This incident is under investigation, and the GDC has a policy of not commenting on events that are under investigation."

TRANSLATION: "the crap hit the fan. We knew it was going to, but didn't care enough about our officers to do anything over the past three years to prevent it. Luckily for us, the officers that were attacked were not seriously hurt or killed, thus lessening the chances that their families will be able to successfully sue us for our incompetence. If we were to comment on this situation, it would show just how poorly we are able to accomplish tasks that ensure the basic safety of the officers that we should hold valuable, but could really care less about, so we are going to use the standard "under investigation/ no comment" statement, so we won't open ourselves up to a bunch of legal problems. You guys in the media, as well as anyone in the public sector that wants to know what is really happening up there, we will tell you the same thing we are telling our unimportant staff members- Stick It. Thank you."

Amen!

And thank you for sticking out two years in that God forsaken place to put me through nursing school. Two weeks into my new job, I told Hays State Prison they weren't getting one of their best guards back - he had better things to do with his life than risk it for a bunch of thugs, rapists, murders, crackheads, and meth addicts. I need him alive - GDC could care less and has said so by their actions COUNTLESS times.

MANY times he would come home from 24 hour shift... and NO overtime pay! "Oh, well... for that 24 hours, we'll give you a 'sick day'... but make sure you have a dr's excuse or you won't get it." Uh... I don't think so! You owe ME!

Ever wonder if your husband, the bread winner of your family, the father of your three kids, is going to come home alive? Have you? Have you ever tried to make a living off 24K (that's GROSS, people!) and had 5 people to support, and a wife in nursing school? It's not EASY - and having to listen to the crap going on at Hays was a living nightmare.

So, regardless of where I am, I will give you a full butt-chewing and spit you OUT if you EVER say something disrespectful to ME about a Hays guard. My husband risked his life EVERY SINGLE DAY he walked through those doors so that YOU or your loved ones didn't have to do that job. Don't give me this bull crap about 'find another job if you don't like it'. It's not an IT job or McDonald's... IT HAS TO BE DONE for community safety. Show some respect!

You guys look out for each other and protect yourselves. The State and the public care more about the inmates than you, so don't depend on either to back you up.
