COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Hawks fall to 0-7

The Shorter baseball team dropped the third game of a three-game series to visiting Barry University, 5-2, in a game called due to rain in the bottom of the sixth with the Hawks mounting a rally.

The Hawks (0-7) received a strong outing from Stuart Charleston, who went the distance, giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out two.

Freshman Walker Borneman hit his first career homer for the Hawks.

Jacob Forrest’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1 early, but a three-run third put Barry (6-0) ahead for good.

Shorter struck again in the bottom of the fourth when Borneman homered over the left field fence.

When the rain fall caused halted action, the Hawks had runners on first and second with no outs.

The Hawks will be host Tusculum at the Ledbetter Complex on Tuesday.

SHORTER WOMEN’S

LACROSSE

The Lady Hawks ended a two-game, season-opening road trip with an 8-5 at Newberry on Sunday.

Shorter lost at Erskine 11-10 on Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Shorter won behind three goals from Avery Armstrong and two more from Skinner.

The Lady Hawks broke out to a 3-0 lead that saw both Armstrong and Skinner scoring on free position shots, while Shelby Beverly would add a goal on the assist from Mia Wiggins.

Shorter entered halftime up 4-1 as Katie Ott added an unassisted first half goal.

The Lady Hawks are back in action on Tuesday against Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.
