Chanlir Segarra poured in a game-high 36 points as Berry College defeated Birmingham-Southern, 81-76, in a Southern Athletic Association quarterfinal game on Friday.
The fifth-seeded Lady Vikings improved to 13-13, and will play top-seeded Millsaps today.
The Lady Panthers, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, end their year at 12-13.
Segarra was 8-of-21 shooting with six three-pointers, dished seven assists and made 12-of-14 free throws in the contest. Alexa Evans added nine points, and Mel McLean contributed eight for Berry.
In the first 20 minutes, Segarra was red hot. She was 7-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range, and also went 6-of-6 at the foul line.
She converted two from the free throw line to give Berry its largest lead, 49-31, with 49 seconds remaining in the first half. The Vikings had a 17-8 edge in rebounds, and led 49-35 at the break.
“We had team effort tonight,” said Berry Head Coach Stephanie Dunn. “Chanlir really put pressure on them by hitting her shots early.”
Despite the big lead, BSC rallied. In fact, over the last six minutes, Berry led by no more than six points the final 13:30. Panther Alex Adams even tied the game at 76 on a layup with 2:11 on the clock. The Vikings, however, scored the game’s last five points and prevailed.
Amber Caldwell paced Birmingham-Southern with 20 points. She made 5-7 three-pointers.
“BSC is a good team and they fought their way back in the game,” Dunn said. “We played together as a team, however, and got a great victory.”
In the first game on Friday, Millsaps bested Sewanee, 64-33. The Majors--which won both regular-season meetings--and the Vikings play on Saturday at 7 p.m.
