The Berry College women saw their season come to end in the Southern Athletic Association semifinals on Saturday when top-seeded Millsaps defeated the Lady Vikings, 66-59.

Former Coosa star Mel McLean had 17 points and tied for high-point honors with MC’s Shante Morton. Megan Walsh had 12 points for Berry. Tara Mullinax and Alexa Evans both added 11.

The Vikings out-rebounded the Majors, 37-26. Mullinax earned a double-double with her game-best 11 rebounds.

McLean made a jumper with 33 seconds left that cut the margin to 61-57. Millsaps then converted four straight free throws to seal the game.

WOMEN: GNTC 81,

Southern Crescent 25

The GNTC women took a big step toward a second straight bid to the NJCAA’s National Tournament as they sailed to a win in the region tournament semi-final against Southern Crescent.

The nation’s eighth-leading rebounder, Odessa Person, pulled down a monstrous 19 rebounds and add a game-high 13 points in the post-season win for Georgia Northwestern in the tourney’s elimination round.

Partner post player Terika Mostella added 12 points and 13 boards in the effort.

Georgia Northwestern (14-10, 6-1) will take on Middle Georgia Tech today at 2 p.m.

WOMEN: Shorter 66, Union 57

The Lady Hawks got double digit points from four players to pull away late at Union, taking the victory in Gulf South Conference action.

Karisma Boykin led all scorers with 19 points, tied with Kelsey Risner from Union, as she scored 13 of those points in the second half to help Shorter (15-10, 10-7, GSC) complete the season sweep of the fellow GSC newcomer.

The Lady Hawks held a one point lead at the intermission, 25-24, as Union was able to stay close with the help of Risner connecting on a trio of 3-pointers for nine points off the bench.

Union was able to make six 3-pointers, compared to one for the Lady Hawks in the first half.

Shorter shot 41 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the free throw line to help protect the lead.

The Lady Hawks will finish the regular season on March 2 from Alabama-Huntsville at 6 p.m.

MEN: Union 72, Shorter 68

Three Hawks reached double digits in points but Union was able to rally in the second half to win, 72-68.

Union was able to shoot 47 percent from behind the arc, while making seven more 3-pointers than the Hawks, to help fuel the comeback.

With the score tied, 29-29, and five minutes to play in the first half, Shorter (15-10, 9-8, GSC) used a 10-7 run to lead by three at the intermission.

Anthony Banks tied the game and added four points during the final run as part of a 12 point half.

Union (7-17, 5-11 GSC) started the second half with a 16-6 run, to lead 52-45 with fifteen minutes to play.

Shorter fought back and draw to the 63-63 tie after a Dedric Ware jumper with 1:35 on the clock.

Ware added another jumper and a 3-pointer, but Union scored nine points during the same span — five points from A.J. Roberts and four free throws made from Pedro Faller.

Shorter will return to action on March 2 from Huntsville when the Hawks visit No. 8 Alabama-Huntsville for an 8 p.m. tip-off.

WOMEN: Darton 62, GHC 56

The Lady Chargers drop-ped the last game of the regular season 62-56 to Darton College in Albany.

Seandre Lee had 18 points and six rebounds, Manon Cherubini had 13 points, four rebounds and five assists.

The Lady Chargers finished their inaugural regular season with a 24-6 record.

The Lady Chargers host a first-round GCAA conference tournament game Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the GHC gym.
