Glenda Almand, a retired high school counselor and current Floyd Medical Center volunteer, was named the hospital’s Good Samaritan Volunteer of the Year on Wednesday.

Almand, a volunteer with the Floyd Medical Center Auxiliary for nine years, has served in many areas including the Floyd Medical Center Gift Shop, The Breast Center at Floyd, surgical services and the First Steps program.

She also organizes school tours and creates a fun and learning experience for children.

An active member of Second Avenue Baptist Church, she is a Sunday school teacher and also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, Heroes Great and Small Inc. and has served as an adviser for the Tri-Hi-Y club for five years.

The Good Samaritan Volunteer of the Year Award honors an individual who has gone beyond expectations in his or her respective field of volunteer service. It is awarded each year in observance of National Volunteer Appreciation Week.

Also at the event, four individuals were honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is given to individuals who not only show outstanding achievement in their service but also a long-standing commitment. The recipients are Clarice Long, Gordon Leiter, Dale McKinney and Sheila Shaw.
