The Rome Braves swept a two-game series from Savannah last week at State Mutual Stadium, but now the Sand Gnats are on the verge of returning the favor in a three-game set at Grayson Stadium.

The Gnats downed the Braves, 5-2, on Thursday night after posting a 4-2 victory in Wednesday’s series opener.

The Braves will look to avoid the sweep tonight in the series finale, which wraps up a five-game, two-city road trip for Rome. The Braves are 2-2 on the trip and 7-7 overall.

In Thursday’s game, the Braves were held scoreless through the seventh inning and trailed 5-0 before Gerry Rodriguez’s two-run triple in the top of the eighth. With the hit, Rodriguez raised his team-leading RBI total to eight.

But the potential Rome rally ended there, and Savannah’s Rhiner Cruz pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his third save.

Joel Campusano and Luis Sumoza finished with two hits for the Braves, who went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the loss.

Rome starter Randall Delgado took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in five innings.
