George and Katy Hicks of Rome recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

The two were married on April 29, 1944, in Stewart, Fla. The couple first met in Hollywood, Fla., while Mrs. Hicks was operating an elevator in the Hollywood Beach Hotel and George was delivering mail in the hotel. It was love at first sight. After many encounters in the elevator, George finally got the courage to ask if he could walk her home. She was delighted, and it has been a fairytale-love story ever since.

They have two children, Tere Williams of Rome and Gary Hicks of Prattville, Ala.

They have four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Hicks was a homemaker. She was born in Key West, Fla. Mr. Hicks was born in Thomasville. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Second Class Petty Officer. After the Navy, he worked for the postal service as a postal carrier and retired after 34 years of service.

The Hicks’ attend St. Mary’s Catholic Church and are also involved with monthly VFW meetings. The Hicks’ are also very involved with many charities.

The couple enjoys watching the Atlanta Braves baseball team, grocery shopping, fishing, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Especially happy times during their marriage were the birth of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchild and traveling around the United States with their children and grandchildren.

They say the secret to a successful marriage is to give a little and take a little, humor and being each other’s best friend.
