On Tuesday at Coosa Country Club, a new chapter in golf for the school and for Rome was opened when the inaugural Darlington School girls golf team — playing its first-ever match — defeated a Rockmart team making its debut this season.
“They had a lot of fun out there,” Darlington coach Raymond Murray said about the three girls who helped the team secure a 106-124 win. “You could see it on their faces. It was a special day.”
Leading Darlington was freshman Jenny Morris, who ended the nine-hole match with a 50. Mary Beth Monk carded a 56 for the Lady Tigers and Liz Fine had a 59.
Sheena Garrett was low medalist for Rockmart with a 61 and Kayla Garrett had a 63.
Darlington’s boys also cruised to a win over Rockmart, 167-194.
Andy Gates took low honors with a 41, while David Hoyt, Drew Davis and Pat Patton all finished at 42. Also playing for Darlington were Sanders Wallis (44) and Ben Burch (46).
Cedartown 158, Rome 167
Despite a pair of 41s from Houston Wheeler and Paul Willis, Rome was unable to overcome Cedartown in a dual match Tuesday at Meadow Lakes Golf Course.
Joe Sapp added a 42 for Rome and Chad Crowe finished at 43.
*Rome 4, Murray County 1
*Rome High continued on the unbeaten path Tuesday when the homestanding Wolves defeated Region 7-AAAA foe Murray County.
Lee Carter and Bryce Coble took straight-set wins in singles for Rome, while Mark Dasher and Blair Carter, and Chris Jester and Will O’Hara claimed doubles wins in straight sets.
Rome (8-0, 7-0) entered the match after a late road trip Monday night to Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe where the Wolves defeated host L-FO 4-1 and Ridgeland 5-0.
The Wolves visit Darlington today for a 4 p.m. match.
Lovett 5, Darlington 0
Darlington’s Tigers were handed their first loss of the season to Class AAA power Lovett in Atlanta. Darlington hosts Rome today at 4 p.m.
*Rome 4, Murray County 1
*Rome’s Lady Wolves remained perfect on the court, downing visiting Murray County in a Region 7-AAAA match.
Rome (8-0, 7-0) swept all three singles matches, thanks to Jessica Strucher, Allie Ward and Natelie Stone, while the No. 2 doubles team of Mara Mangraviti and Courtney Jordan added a win.
Rome visits Darlington today at 4 p.m.
*Darlington 10, Cartersville 0
*The Darlington Lady Tigers improved their overall record to 8-0 and their Area 6-AA/A slate to 4-0 by rolling past visiting Cartersville.
Rachel Wiggins and Helen Davis headed the offensive charge for Darlington with three goals and an assist each.
Emily Brock, Elizabeth Connelley, Erin Euller and Baldwin Harris rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece, while keepers Anna Sargent and Regin Stuckey combined for the shutout in goal.
Darlington hosts Villa Rica today at 5:30 p.m. in a non-region game.
*Westminster 13, Darlington 3
*A third-quarter surge pulled host Darlington to within two goals of Westminster, but the visitors pulled away over the final period to take the win.
T.G. Bertoli, Ben McElrath and Will Foss had a goal each for Darlington (3-3 overall, 2-2 in state play), while goalie Andy Babcock had six saves for the Tigers.
