APPLING, Ga. (AP) — A former administrative clerk for the Columbia County sheriff has been indicted on racketeering and fraud charges after being accused of stealing more than $50,000 from the sheriff's office.

The indictment was handed down Thursday against Wanda Feister Rickerson, 45, of Lincolnton.

Rickerson is charged with violating the Racketeering Influence and Corrupt Organizations Act, theft by taking and two counts of insurance fraud.

Rickerson, who was an administrative clerk at Columbia County Detention Center, is accused of taking more than $50,000 from an inmate fund she oversaw, sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said.

The indictment also says that before a meeting was held with Rickerson about the theft, she staged on-the-job injuries for which she sought medical treatment. She claimed the injuries caused amnesia for the period of September 1995 through Jan. 8, 2003, which coincides with her employment at the sheriff's office, the indictment stated
