The body of a man who police say may have drowned early this morning was found around 1:30 p.m. today near Bridgepoint Plaza where the Oostanaula and Etowah rivers meet.

The unidentified man, believed to be Hispanic, ran away after his vehicle was stopped near the Shorter Avenue Kangaroo Station just after 10 p.m., a Rome Police Department report stated.

According to the report by Rome police oficer Shaun Davis, he spotted the suspect around midnight on the Robert Redden Footbridge.

Davis chased the man and they wrestled briefly along the river, the report stated. Davis tried to subdue him with pepper spray, which the oficer also got on himself.

Davis backed away from the man and tried to get out his handcuffs. The man soon afterward tripped and fell into the river, according to the report.

Oficers tried to get the man to wade to shore, but he walked deeper into the river and went under the water, the report stated.

The man's identity is still not known
