CENTRE, Ala. — The five-year-old victim of an accidental hanging has been identified.

Tommie Austin Lincoln Voyles, 5, of Attalla, Ala., passed away in a Birmingham hospital following an accidental hanging in East Centre on Feb. 6.

According to reports, the boy, his brother and sister were visiting his grandparents on East Main Street in Centre. He was shooting basketball near a tree that had a rope attached. The quarter-inch nylon rope often was used as a swing, according to authorities, who said the boy used a step ladder to reach the rope and apparently slipped and became entangled in the rope. His grandfather immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, according to authorites.

The boy was transported to Cherokee Baptist Medical Center, then flown to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, where he died early Feb. 6
