Tonight, Rome fans will get a look at the real thing.
McCann, the Atlanta Braves catcher, will play for the Rome Braves on a rehab assignment tonight when the Braves play Augusta in the second game of a five-game series at SMS.
McCann, who played on the 2003 Rome team that won the South Atlantic League title, is on the disabled list with a sprained left ankle.
He will likely be used a designated hitter during tonights game. McCann will also play for Rome during Wednesdays doubleheader.
He is eligible to come off the disabled Thursday.
McCann becomes the second former Rome Braves player to return to the team after making it to Atlanta. Pitcher Chuck James made a rehab appearance with Rome last month.
ALL-STAR TIME: Several Rome Braves will find out today if their travel itinerary for June includes a trip to Ohio.
The South Atlantic League is scheduled to announce today the starting lineups for the SALs all-star game, which will be played June 19 in Lake County, Ohio at the home park of the Lake County Captains.
The Braves, who have had the SALs best record throughout the season, are expected to be well represented on the Southern Divisions team.
I would certainly hope we have a few, said Rome manager Randy Ingle. Weve got some guys who have some pretty good numbers who definitely deserve to go. And weve also got a few guys who might not have terrific stats but are still deserving.
The lineups for the SALs all-star games are selected based on voting done by the leagues managers and coaches, along with a few votes cast by select members of the media.
It can, at times, be a tricky process, considering the teams from the Southern and Northern divisions dont often face each other and in some cases, not at all in the first half of the season.
That makes it tough, said Ingle. Hopefully the (managers and coaches) in our division have a good feel for the players in the Southern division, at least.
Rome first baseman Isaiah Kaaihue, who ranks among the league leaders in numerous offensive categories, appears to be a lock. Jo-Jo Reyes, the ace of the Braves rotation, also seems to be a likely selection.
Third baseman Eric Campbell, catcher Max Ramirez, and outfielder Quentin Davis are also possibilities.
Ingle himself seems to be a likely choice as the manager of the Southern Division team
