The chairman of Berry College’s Board of Trustees has resigned from his leadership and membership position after 36 years of service to the college.

William B. Stokely III of Tennessee, president and chairman of The Stokely Company, will be temporarily replaced by W. Glenn Cornell of Dacula, a 1962 Berry College graduate and current vice chair of the board, the school announced Thursday.

Cornell will serve in the interim until a new chairman is elected by the board.

“I do this with the full knowledge that the college is in great condition,” Stokely wrote. “Berry has a new president and a very engaged and active board.”

From 1970 to 1985, Stokely was was a member of Berry’s Board of Visitors, serving two terms as chairman. He became a member of the Board of Trustees in 1986 and was named chairman in 2002.

Cornell has been a member of the Berry College Board of Trustees since 1995 and previously served as a member of the Board of Visitors.

“The Berry community is grateful to have had Bill Stokely’s expertise and guidance for so many years,” said new Berry President Stephen Briggs in a written release. “His length of service is impressive, but it is the quality of his involvement for which we are most appreciative. We wish Bill and Kay the very best.”
