A 2-year-old Lindale girl has been airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., after falling into a pit and being submerged under water for an extended period of time, police said.

Floyd County police investigators said the unidentified toddler was playing away from her Lindale home this morning when she fell into a pool of water that had collected in large, excavated area near the new Pepperell High School.

The child was not identified by Sgt. Teri Davis, a juvenile investigator with the county police, but she said the girl was able to breathe on her own again although she had not regained consciousness
