Voters around the state are buying into the idea of using a 1-cent special purpose, local option sales tax to pay for community and school projects.

Savannah-Chatham County passed both a countywide SPLOST and an ELOST for education in a Sept. 19 special election. The vote adds two cents to the local sales tax.

Other counties that backed 1-cent SPLOSTs this month include Gordon, Walker, Whitfield, Murray, Jackson, Lowndes and Walton.

Floyd County is one of only three localities to reject a SPLOST proposal between June 21, 2005, and July 18, 2006. The office of the secretary of state provided the following information on the 99 local sales tax elections during that period:

  • June 21, 2005 special elections: Seven counties held SPLOST votes and three held ELOST votes. All but the Floyd County SPLOST passed.

  • Sept. 20, 2005 special elections: Twelve counties held SPLOST votes and 14 held ELOST votes. All passed.

  • Nov. 8, 2005 municipal elections: Fifteen counties held SPLOST votes and seven held ELOST votes. All but the Whitfield County SPLOST passed.

  • March 21, 2006 special elections: Eleven counties held SPLOST votes and 20 held ELOST votes. All passed.

  • July 18, 2006 primary elections: Five counties held SPLOST votes and five held ELOST votes. All but the Douglas County SPLOST passed.
