A crash on Interstate 85 in Opelika, Ala., killed one Georgia Highlands student and sent another to a Columbus hospital in a helicopter, authorities said.

Matthew Wayne Prather, 20, of Cedartown was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:34 p.m Friday by Lee County, Ala., Coroner Bill Harris. Prather was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Daniel Sa, a Brazilian exchange student who also resides in Cedartown.

“Prather was killed instantly when the vehicle … left the interstate and flipped several times, ejecting him.” Harris said. “It appeared that (he) was wearing seatbelt.”

Sa was airlifted to Columbus Medical Center with critical injuries, Harris said. Hospital authorities declined to provide any information about his status Saturday.

The two students were apparently returning from a spring break trip to Panama City, Fla., when the accident occurred.

Prather, a graduate of Cedartown High School, had also attended Jacksonville State University and Brevard Music Center and was remembered by his family as an “accomplished musician.”

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of First Baptist Church, with a burial occurring at Greenwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday at Olin L. Gammage and Sons Funeral Home in Cedartown.
