Amina Montana, 11, pets a horse at the Atlanta Steeplechase held today in Floyd County. The annual event benefits the American Red Cross Coosa Valley Chapter.

The threat of rain didn’t stop thousands from crowding into Kingston Downs for the annual running of the equestrian event.

Rains held off most of the day and spectators seemed appreciative of that fact.

“This year’s event is fabulous,” said Joy Puckett, manager of the Friends of the Rome Library and Gift Shop. “I’ve gone every year it’s been in Rome, and it’s a lot better than it used to be in Atlanta, a lot more room, and easier to navigate. I’m glad the rain held off — it’s such a festive event.”

The track is located off U.S. 411 east of Rome on the Floyd County-Bartow County line.
