Rome city officials finalized the $1.825 million purchase Wednesday of three tracts on West Third Street they expect to become the cornerstone of redevelopment efforts in the area.

The city says ownership of the properties will give the city more control over the future of its downtown district, which is shifting to make the Oostanaula River a focal point.

The purchase gives the city control of a combined 4.2 acres with river frontage in the district.
