Liedtka was judged by a psychologist to be incapable of helping in her own defense and that she cannot distinguish between right and wrong or fantasy and reality.
It is certainly a tragedy all around, Judge Walter J. Matthews said during the hearing. There is no question about it if she is incapable of forming a criminal intent, she could not be convicted of a crime.
Liedtka had to communicate with the court through a series of two interpreters. One would translate from spoken English into American Sign Language, then another from sign into a more colloquial sign language that the defendant used.
She will be remanded into the care of the Georgia Department of Human Resources for evaluation. If she were ever to be released from DHR supervision, Matthews would have to make a final determination.
Liedtka, Floyd County detective Dan Bickers said, described taking a .22-caliber revolver that belonged to her father who lived in the same apartment and entering Wades apartment that night.
Liedtka admitted to the killing before she was even a suspect, police said.
She said she wanted to do right by God, and thats why she wanted to tell us, Bickers said at the time.
