Federal Judge Harold L. Murphy has set an Aug. 22 hearing date to determine if Georgia's Voter ID law is constitutional.

Secretary of State Karen Handel announced last week that the state plans to use the new law during September special elections, limiting which IDs will be accepted at the polls.

Murphy scheduled a final "trial on the merits" for Aug. 22 in U.S. District Court in Rome.

The case has been before the courts for almost two years. The August hearing will likely last a couple of days, court officials said.

Murphy agreed to restart proceeding and enjoined all other motions to be part of this final trial after opponents of the law requested an immediate hearing following last week's announcement by the secretary state.
