Jamie Doss, Rome City Commissioner, stands next to Ansley Saville, first vice recent of the Xavier chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, during an Arbor Day celebration this morning. The event marked the planting of an American holly near the intersection of South Broad Street and Branham Avenue.

Each year on Arbor Day, Americans are encouraged to plant trees. The celebration originated in Nebraska in the late 19th century.

Also this morning was a celebration of the addition of the Floyd Medical Arts Center Community Oak, a Southern Red Oak, to the “Landmark & Historic Tree Register” of the Georgia Urban Forestry Council.

See Saturday’s Rome News-Tribune for more on the Arbor Day celebration
