The city of Rome is way ahead of legislation pending in the state House that would require local governments set up ethics panels to hear complaints against elected officials.

But Commissioner Bill Collins said he takes issue with the ordinance passed by the city in 2000, especially its provision that calls for a complaint against a commissioner to be reviewed by three sitting commissioners.

He has asked for time to discuss changes during the board’s retreat set for Friday and Saturday at Red Top Mountain State Lodge in Bartow County.

“I have always been in favor of the ethics resolution, but I have some reservations about the (ordinance),” Collins said. “I’m not interested in being part of what some might call a kangaroo court.”
