ATHENS — Longtime University of Georgia radio announcer Larry Munson is recovering from recent surgery, according to an announcement by family members.

Munson underwent a procedure on Friday to remove a subdural hematoma, a condition in which blood collects on the surface of the brain. While his recovery period is not yet clear, he is expected to recover fully from the procedure.

“I was really pleased to hear that Larry’s surgery went well on Friday,” UGA Athletic Director Damon Evans said. “All of us in the Bulldog Nation wish him a full and speedy recovery.”

Munson is scheduled to begin his 43rd season calling Georgia football games in 2008. He has been honored many times for his work by many organizations, including the UGA football program, which named him an Honorary Letterman last season. He also has been honored by the National Football Foundation, the College Hall of Fame, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the Georgia Association of Broadcasters and the Georgia State Legislature.

Munson’s family and his attending medical staff have asked everyone to respect his privacy during his recovery. Anyone wishing to send cards or letters to him is asked to send them to the following address: Larry Munson, c/o UGA Athletic Association, P.O. Box 1472, Athens, 30603
