CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. -- A birthday party turned tragic for a Rome family Sunday afternoon when a 3-year-old drowned at Little River Canyon Mouth Park.

The victim, according to reports, was identified as Nancy Gusman Reyes of Rome. Family members, after noticing the girl was missing, began to search and found her in the swimming area approximately 15 minutes later, around 3:30 p.m.

Cherokee County Coroner Don Rogers said attempts to revive the victim were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Cherokee Medical Center a short time later, he said
