The state Department of Natural Resources says biologists and volunteers have counted 1,544 turtle nests on Georgia beaches so far this year.
That's 40 more nests than the old state record set in 2003. And the loggerhead nesting season still has more than two weeks to go through. The season runs from May through August.
Georgia sea turtle coordinator Mark Dodd says biologists can't say for sure why sea turtles are nesting in such large numbers this year. He noted the state has a long way to go to reach its goal of at least 2,000 turtle nests per year
