JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) — Clayton County has rehired 100 of the 400 teachers who were told earlier this month they would not have jobs in the next school year.

School officials say some of the remaining 300 who lost their jobs could be brought back if there are vacancies. The district employs about 4,000 teachers and counselors.

Former Superintendent John Thompson laid off the teachers two weeks ago amid budget cuts.

Three days later, Thompson was terminated and Valya Lee was named interim superintendent.

A committee appointed by Lee found dozens of special education teachers had been terminated without a performance review, said Douglas Hendrix, the district’s acting chief human resources officer.

“At present, no certified tenured teacher with an adequate performance evaluation was denied a contract,” Hendrix told the board Monday
