Georgia Highlands College faculty and staff will on Friday take the first of six furlough days required this school year.

Fridays are normally a half-day for the college, and classes are usually very light. However, admissions and business offices are usually open until mid-afternoon.

During the announced furlough days, most sites will be closed. That includes the Floyd campus, Heritage Hall, and the new Paulding and Douglas sites. The Cartersville campus and the Marietta site on the campus of Southern Polytechnical Institute will operate as usual, and those instructors will take alternate furlough days.

Furlough days scheduled through this calendar year are:

Friday; Sept. 18; Oct. 16; Nov. 25 and Dec. 23.

Earlier this month, the state Board of Regents approved the cost-cutting measure of six furlough days at all Georgia colleges and universities. The move is expected to save $42 million.
