AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Police are looking for two women they say abandoned a 1-year-old child in a shopping cart after being caught shoplifting supplies for the infant.

It happened in a Food Lion grocery store along Windsor Spring Road. An employee tells Richmond County Sheriff’s Office he tried to stop two women he saw he saw leaving with 26 cans of baby milk and two bottles of yogurt about 1 p.m. Friday.

One woman fled immediately, leaving the child in the cart. The other woman ran shortly after. Police contacted the Department of Family and Children Services, and the child was released to his father. The women face charges of theft by shoplifting and child abandonment.
