The letter titled “TSA stops jam but not bombs, (Rome News-Tribune, Jan. 7) should be read nationwide. It illustrates the lengths to which we have gone since 9/11 to avoid “profiling.” Probably the next terrorist who tries to board one of our planes will avoid some of the glaring red flags of the Christmas Day terrorists like paying cash for a one-way ticket. But he certainly cannot disguise himself as an Anglo-Saxon/Celtic/Slavic woman. It is true that all not all Muslims are terrorists. This seems to be the major concern of the Muslim spokesmen on television. This was a concern of President Bush. But I know of no intelligent person who has accused all Muslims of being terrorist. It is true that Timothy McVeigh, an atheist and a Caucasian was a terrorist in the 1990s. He was tried, convicted and put to death. But we also have to know that every terrorist on and since 9/11, when nearly 3,000 were killed, have been Muslim males age 15-50. Every one! Surely innocent Muslim men in that age group can understand why they need to be questioned more than to waste time and money to search a Caucasian woman returning from France with a tiny jar of French preserves.
What if the next 9/11 is perpetrated by an Anglo-Saxon/Celtic/Slavic person? The name "Richard Reid" surely wouldn't raise any red flags on a fly list. It's true that conspicuously Muslim travelers should be prepared for extra hassles, but I don't see why that should make us sleep better at night, since any number of manmade disasters are possible, not just those inspired by jihadists. I'm not saying we shouldn't rely on profiling, just that profiling is not the magic bullet people like Ms. Shaw seem to think it is.
