Metropolitan United Methodist Church, 700 Broad St., is asking other local churches and community members to reach out to the earthquake victims in Haiti.

The church will hold a rally beginning today at 3 p.m. and lasting about two weeks. The mission is to assemble a variety of aid kits to send to the country through UMCOR, more accurately known as the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

The Rev. King Harris said many other churches in Rome have been contacted about today’s event.

He said UMCOR hopes to send over a variety of emergency kits to help the Haitian people — health kits, school kits, layette kits, sewing kits, bedding kits, flood buckets and even birth kits.

All donations and kits will go directly to Haiti without any tax or shipping fees thanks to UMCOR.

The Methodist relief organization will pick up the kits and make sure they are shipped.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the rally and attend the initial service at Metropolitan United Methodist Church today from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m.

For more information contact King Harris at 706-291-9205.
