The Floyd Board of Education will approve a plan for a reduction in its workforce during its monthly meeting today at 7 p.m. at the central office on Riverside Parkway, but school officials say they don’t expect the plan will be needed.

“At this point we don’t anticipate in our school system a need to use that,” said Tim Hensley, assistant to the superintendent.

On a related note, the board will also OK a proposal for three state-mandated furlough days for the spring semester. One furlough day for all employees has already been marked off thanks to the snow day on Jan. 8.

The proposal calls for principals to coordinate with their teachers on their other two days. The options include March 12 and June 1-3. The year-round, central office staff will take their other two furlough days April 20-21. Furlough days have saved the school system $975,000.

During the meeting the Floyd BOE will also:

  • Hear a proposal for the spring and summer driver’s education program. Proposed dates are March 15-19, June 2-5, June 7-10, June 14-17. The fee for the class is $185 and includes thirty hours of classroom instruction, four hours of range, two hours of road driving, sixteen hours of observation, and eight hours of homework for a total of sixty hours.

  • Recognize the Coosa High School team that recently won the FCS Academic Decathlon.

  • Honor the month’s Distinguished Service Award Winners. They are: Armuchee Middle principal Albert Watters; Glenwood paraprofessional Glenda Kerr; Armuchee High counselor Tammy Law; Midway Primary secretary Lee McDaniel; Pepperell Elementary teacher Zack Mendence; Coosa Middle teacher Lila Culberson.

They should make 4/15/2010 a furlough day so teachers can attend the tea party demonstrations.
